INTRODUCTION TO WASH

WHAT IS WASH?

Did you know that washing your hands with soap can reduce the spread of infectious diseases by up to 50%? Yet millions of people around the world still lack access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities. WASH — Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene — exists to close that gap and protect community health.

Think of WASH as a three-legged stool. Water, sanitation, and hygiene each form one leg — remove any one, and the stool can't stand. A healthy community needs all three working together.

Water
Water covers about 71% of the Earth's surface, but only around 0.5% of it is readily available as freshwater for human use — the rest is locked away as ocean water, glaciers, or deep underground reserves. That scarcity means the freshwater we do have must be used carefully. WASH helps communities access, safely store, and treat water for drinking, cooking, and daily life, while protecting water sources from contamination.

Sanitation
Sanitation is the safe management of human waste so it doesn't contaminate the environment. Left unmanaged, waste pollutes water supplies and spreads diseases like cholera, typhoid, and diarrhoea — weakening a community's health and productivity. Toilet access remains a major crisis in many slum communities, and rising population density makes proper sanitation even more urgent. WASH promotes the practices needed to close this gap.

Hygiene
Hygiene covers the everyday habits that prevent disease — handwashing after the toilet or before cooking, safe diaper changes, brushing teeth, and covering coughs and sneezes. These small actions protect children and vulnerable people, reduce illness-related absences at school and work, and build healthier communities overall. During COVID-19, something as simple as regular handwashing became one of the most effective tools for slowing infection — a clear reminder of how much WASH programs matter.

Why It Matters
WASH is about more than preventing disease. Access to clean water, safe sanitation, and good hygiene protects dignity, reduces stress, and gives people the foundation to live healthier, safer, and more productive lives.
